Fifteen minutes from Porto, the village of Piana is listed among the « Plus Beaux Villages de France » (Most Beautiful Villages of France). Perched above the sea between the famous Calanques and the Gulf of Porto, it is far more than a place you drive through: a genuine village, a legendary walk out to the Capo Rosso, and one of the loveliest coves in Corsica. Here is what not to miss.

The village of Piana, one of the most beautiful in France
With its ochre-fronted stone houses, its flower-lined lanes and its church of Sainte-Marie and distinctive bell tower, Piana has kept all the charm of a traditional Corsican village. From the square in front of the church the view drops away to the Gulf of Porto and the mountains — a panorama that sums up the beauty of the west coast on its own.
It is a pleasant place to wander, between a handful of craft shops, cafés and restaurants. It is also the natural starting point for the two great outings nearby: the Capo Rosso and the cove at Ficaghjola.
The Capo Rosso walk and its Genoese tower
This is the essential walk at Piana. From the road towards Arone, the path climbs to the Genoese tower of Turghju, perched more than 300 metres above the sea at the tip of a red granite headland. It is one of the most spectacularly sited Genoese towers in the whole of Corsica.
Allow about 3 hours there and back (moderate). The reward is a 360° view you will not forget — over the Calanques, the Gulf of Porto, the Scandola Reserve to the north and open sea as far as the eye can see. The climb is exposed to the sun: set off early, and take plenty of water, a hat and proper shoes.
The cove at Ficaghjola, a hidden treasure
Below Piana, reached by a path leading down, the cove of Ficaghjola is a small pebble beach with turquoise water of rare clarity, framed by red cliffs. This former fishermen's shelter is one of the most photogenic corners in the region.
Access is on foot (about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the car park, which is very limited — come early). Bring proper shoes for the descent. You will find Ficaghjola and the other swimming spots on our beaches around Porto page.
Practical advice for visiting Piana
- When to go: early morning or late afternoon, especially in July and August when the village and the car parks are very busy in the middle of the day.
- Parking: spaces are scarce in the heart of Piana and at Ficaghjola. Arrive early and use the marked car parks.
- Proper shoes: essential for the Capo Rosso as well as for the descent to Ficaghjola.
- Water and sun: there is little shade on the paths — water, a hat and sun cream are a must.
🚗 From Hôtel Le Vaïta: Piana is about 15 minutes away by car on the D81 — which passes through the famous Calanques de Piana on the way. Half a day is enough for the village and one of the two outings; allow a full day to see everything.
