Porto and the Gulf of Porto are among the rare destinations worth visiting at any point in the tourist season — from May to October. But depending on what you are after (hiking, the sea, quiet, atmosphere), some periods suit better than others.
As hoteliers in Porto for many years, we share here our first-hand knowledge of the seasons and our advice for planning your stay.
🌸 Spring (May – mid-June): quiet and nature
May and early June are arguably the most pleasant months for anyone who loves nature and hiking. The maquis is in flower — asphodels, lavender, cistus and immortelle scent the paths — and the colours are unusually intense.
The weather is mild and sunny (18 to 24°C during the day), with cool nights. The sea starts to warm up from June (21 to 23°C). Paths are clear, boat trips are running, and visitor numbers are very manageable. Hotels and restaurants are available without booking weeks ahead.
Best for: hikers, nature and photography lovers, couples who prefer peace and quiet.
☀️ Summer (mid-June – August): sea, sun and buzz
High season in Porto is summer. Temperatures climb to between 28 and 35°C during the day, and the sea reaches 24 to 26°C — a treat for swimming and diving. Boat trips leave every day, there is plenty going on, and restaurants are at their best.
The flip side: July and August bring a great many visitors. The roads, the Calanques viewpoints and the marinas can be crowded in the middle of the day. Booking ahead — for the hotel as well as for boat trips — is absolutely essential.
Best for: families with children, swimmers, boat trip enthusiasts, travellers who like a lively atmosphere.
🍂 Autumn (September – October): the connoisseurs' season
September is, according to many of our regular guests, the finest month in Porto. Temperatures stay pleasant (22 to 27°C), the sea is still warm (24°C), the crowds thin out, and the light takes on that golden quality particular to the Mediterranean in autumn. The red cliffs of Scandola and the Calanques de Piana are absolutely magnificent under that late-season sun.
Hiking becomes comfortable again, boat trips run until mid-October, and the roads are drivable without patience once more. The mood is calmer and conversations with locals come more easily.
October is cooler and less reliable weather-wise, but still offers fine days and a genuine taste of Corsica out of season.
Best for: those after quiet, couples, hikers, travellers who want the best of both seasons.
A summary, by priority
🌸 Hiking and nature: May-June and September
🏊 Swimming and the sea: July-August and September
⛵ Boat trips: May to mid-October
🧘 Peace and quiet: May-June and September-October
👨👩👧 Families with children: July-August (or June for more calm)
Our advice, as hoteliers
If you cannot decide, aim for the first or second week of September. Statistically it is the period that combines the most advantages: the sea is still warm, the weather reliable, visitor numbers a third lower than in August, boat trips available, restaurants all open. And a light over the Calanques and the Gulf of Porto that you will remember for a long time.
For families who cannot travel outside the school holidays, early July is a good compromise between summer atmosphere and crowds that are still manageable.
