Porto is one of the most extraordinary villages in Corsica. Tucked into the mouth of the Porto river in the gulf of the same name, it combines red granite cliffs, pine forest, crystal-clear water and immediate proximity to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Scandola Reserve and the Calanques de Piana. A village on a human scale, and yet an ideal base for days full of discoveries.
Whether you are into hiking, the sea, diving or landscapes, here are the activities not to miss around Porto.
Boat trips: the gateway to Scandola
Heading out to sea from the port of Porto is the experience visitors prize most, and with good reason: from the harbour you reach landscapes of striking beauty that no road can take you to. Several operators offer different formats:
- The Scandola trip on its own (3 to 4h): to come close to the red rhyolite cliffs and watch the ospreys, dolphins and other inhabitants of the protected waters of the Scandola Reserve. RIBs can slip into the sea caves.
- Scandola + Calanques de Piana (4 to 6h): the full package — the volcanic cliffs of Scandola on one side, the pink granite formations of the Calanques on the other, with a swimming stop in turquoise water.
- Full-day outings with a picnic on board, ideal for families.
Departures are every morning from around 9am, May to October. In July and August, booking ahead is essential because places go quickly.
Hiking around Porto: from easy to expert
The area around Porto offers exceptional hiking country, with paths for every level.
The Spelunca Gorges (easy to moderate)
This classic path starts at the Genoese bridge in Ota and climbs the gorges alongside the Spelunca torrent up to the village of Évisa (about 2h30 of walking). The route runs past natural pools of cool water that are perfect for a swim. There and back from Porto is doable for families with children over eight.
The Mule Trail (easy)
In the Calanques de Piana, this old paved track once linked Piana to Ota and was used by mule before the road opened around 1850. The loop starts at the Piana football ground and offers a commanding view over the calanques in just 45 minutes. About 3.1 km.
The climb to Capo d'Orto (hard)
For experienced hikers, the climb to the summit of Capo d'Orto (1,294 m) is a memorable adventure. The path works its way up rocky slopes and opens onto a 360° panorama over the Gulf of Porto, the Calanques de Piana and the interior of the island. Allow a full day.
Diving and snorkelling in the Gulf of Porto
The waters of the Gulf of Porto are among the richest in the Mediterranean. Partly protected thanks to the proximity of Scandola, the rocky sea floor teems with life: groupers, moray eels, octopus, conger eels, posidonia meadows and a multitude of colourful fish. Visibility is excellent, especially early in the season.
Several diving clubs offer first dives (from age eight) and outings for certified divers. The most remarkable spots are near the Crovani headland and the Gargalo rocks.
For snorkelling, the small coves reachable from Porto or by boat hold fine surprises from as little as a metre down.
The Genoese tower and the village of Ota
The Genoese tower of Porto, perched on a red rocky spur above the harbour, is the symbol of the village. Built in the 16th century by the Republic of Genoa, it has watched over the entrance to the gulf for centuries. It is about ten minutes on foot from the centre of the village, and the view from the tower is splendid at sunset.
Five kilometres from Porto, the village of Ota is also worth the detour. Its paved lanes, granite houses and unaffected atmosphere contrast with the bustle of the seafront. It is also the starting point for walks in the gorges.
💡 Our tip: Hôtel Le Vaïta is a stone's throw from the port of Porto. Our team is here to point you towards the activities that suit the season and what you feel like, and to tell you about the boat trips on offer.
Escape Carotte: the pirate escape game in Porto
For an unusual evening, a rainy day or simply something different, Escape Carotte is the address we recommend to all our guests without hesitation. Set up in a former shop converted into a genuine pirate ship (150 m²!), it is the largest escape game in Corsica — and probably the most spectacular. You play as a private crew, solving puzzles in a carefully built set.
- Five minutes on foot from the hotel, facing the marina
- Suitable from age seven — ideal with family
- Daytime and evening slots
- A themed mini golf on site as well
