Porto has neither an airport nor a station. You arrive by plane or ferry in Ajaccio (the nearest, ~2 h by road) or in Calvi (~2 h), then reach Porto by road. There is no direct ferry to Porto.
The routes to Porto, compared
| From | Mode | Distance | Mainland time | Corsican time* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ajaccio airport | Car | ~80 km | ~2 h | ~1 h 30 |
| Calvi airport | Car | ~75 km | ~2 h | ~1 h 30 |
| Ajaccio port (ferry) | Car | ~80 km | ~2 h | ~1 h 30 |
| Bastia | Car | ~150 km | ~2 h 45 – 3 h | ~2 h 15 – 2 h 30 |
| Figari | Car | ~200 km | ~3 h 30 | ~3 h |
"Corsican time" = for those who know the road by heart (≈ −30 min on every trip). "Mainland time" = what to allow for a first visit, taking the time to admire the scenery (and catch your breath in the bends!).
Which airport should you choose for Porto?
- Ajaccio Napoléon-Bonaparte (AJA): the most convenient, the most flights, ~2 h by road along the coast (D81). The one to favour.
- Calvi Sainte-Catherine (CLY): ~2 h as well, on a winding and splendid coastal road, but with rarer, seasonal flights.
- Bastia or Figari: possible if you find a good flight deal, but noticeably further (3 h and more). Best kept for bargain fares.
Our advice: hiring a car is all but essential to make the most of Porto and its surroundings (see our car-hire tips below).
Arriving by sea
- No direct ferry to Porto: the harbour is tiny and reserved for pleasure boats.
- Ferries reach Ajaccio, Calvi or Bastia from Marseille, Toulon and Nice.
- Companies: Corsica Linea, Corsica Ferries, La Méridionale.
- The big advantage: arriving with your own car. After that, it's the road, just as from the airport.
The roads into Porto
Times given in mainland time (first visit); allow ~30 min less in Corsican time.
The D81 from Ajaccio — the most used
It runs along Tiuccia, Sagone and Cargèse, then crosses the Calanques of Piana before opening onto the Gulf of Porto. A magnificent scenic road: plan stops for the viewpoints.
The D81 from Calvi — along the coast
It runs through Osani, Partinello and Serriera, with exceptional viewpoints at the Col de la Croix and the Col de Palmarella. Splendid, but to be driven gently.
The D81B — the connoisseurs' coastal variant
A road you often only drive once in your life… unless you're on a motorbike. Magnificent, but it adds about 30 minutes compared with the normal route (≈ 1 h on the stretch concerned).
🌊 Recommended stop: the Fango delta, a lovely relaxing stop along the way.
The D84 through the interior — Gorges of Spelunca
From Corte, the Niolu or the Col de Vergio, via Évisa and Marignana. A spectacular route through the mountains, but narrow in places (tricky passing).
Bus, taxi and bike
By bus / coach
Regular lines link Ajaccio → Porto (Autocars Ceccaldi, serving Cargèse, Piana, Porto and Ota — roughly 1 return trip in winter, 2 in July–August) and Calvi → Porto (SAIB / Autocars de l'Île de Beauté, the Porto–Galéria–Calvi line, seasonal, roughly May to September). Services are infrequent and vary by season: always check the latest timetables on the official websites before setting off.
By taxi
Jean Do Taxi handles transfers from the airport or the port, and your trips around the area without a car. A comfortable and reliable option. taxi-ouest-corsica.fr ↗
By bike
Numerous fountains line every road (handy for topping up your water). On the other hand, there are no dedicated cycle lanes: the narrow roads are shared with cars. Best kept for experienced cyclists, and take care. On site, our garage welcomes bikes too (e-bike charging available).
From Ajaccio airport to Hotel Le Vaïta
From Ajaccio airport, join the D81 towards Sagone, Cargèse and Piana, then follow Porto: allow about 2 hours to the marina of Porto, in the municipality of Ota. The final stretch, through the Calanques of Piana, is one of the most beautiful introductions in all of Corsica.
Most car-hire firms are based right at Ajaccio airport: pick up your vehicle on the spot before hitting the road. On arrival, the hotel has parking for its guests, and our enclosed garage welcomes motorbikes and bikes.
Unsure about your route, arriving late, or need help arranging a taxi transfer? Contact reception: we'll help you prepare your arrival with peace of mind.
Our practical tips
- GPS: prefer Google Maps over Waze or the car's GPS. The latter sometimes favour the shortest route by distance — but far longer in time (small mountain roads).
- Fuel: petrol stations are scarce, especially towards Corte and Porto. Fill up whenever you can.
- Electric vehicle: few charging points. On charging apps, filter for stations > 40 A to aim for fast charging and avoid wasting time.
- Car hire: rather than the big chains — which don't always deliver the vehicle booked online (electric instead of petrol, or the other way round) — consider peer-to-peer car-hire platforms. A few signs of wear at times, but cheaper and more flexible.
- Book early: whatever the option, summer is tight (vehicle shortages).
- Crowds: peaks at the Calanques of Piana in high summer — set off early in the morning.
- Driving: narrow roads and tight bends. Patience and caution are the watchwords.
