The neighbour's guide

Camping or hotel to discover the gulf?

Camping or hotel to discover the Gulf of Porto? Both have their strengths. Here is an honest tour of the 4 campsites of Porto — their strong points, their limits, and who they suit. And if, after a day of hiking or a boat trip, you'd rather have a real bed, we'll also tell you about our solution.

We know our neighbours well, and the idea here isn't to compete with them: it's simply to help you choose the accommodation that fits you.

Camping Les Oliviers

★★★★
Camping Les Oliviers, Porto

The largest of the four and the only 4-star in Porto. It stands out for its magnificent swimming pool, roulottes (wooden caravans) to rent, an on-site restaurant and, rarer for a campsite, an air-conditioned gym. There is also a tennis court and an electric charging point.

  • Setting: by the river, just after the bridge, at the entrance to Porto.
  • Worth knowing: very steep ground, and paid Wi-Fi across the whole campsite.
  • Who it's for: families and active stays wanting full facilities.

Camping Sole e Vista

★★★

Arguably the best view of all the Porto campsites: an infinity pool facing the gulf, a restaurant and cocktail bar combined, and evening events once a week in high season.

  • Location: by the Spar car park — very handy for shopping and day-to-day life.
  • Prices: among the most affordable for the rental options.
  • Worth knowing: the lodge tents heat up a lot in high summer, not very comfortable in serious heat.
  • Who it's for: those who want the view and proximity to shops, on a small budget.

Camping Le Porto

★★

An establishment we know less well, with the shortest opening period and no hard-built lodging (tent or van only). What we can say for sure: a pretty, leafy setting, where the trees are named — pleasant for nature lovers.

  • Who it's for: self-sufficient campers (tent, van) seeking leafy calm.

Camping Funtana all'Ora

★★★ Our favourite

"The fountain in the shade."

Our favourite of the selection. Rental of chalets, mobile homes and even caravans, linen provided, free-to-use barbecues, and a river less than 300 m away on foot. The pool is heated all season, even in April and October. On the food side: generous pizzas and a warm-bread service in the morning. Evening events on Tuesdays in July–August.

  • Worth knowing: outside town, ~3 km from the centre and the beach. What you lose in convenience, you gain in peace and quiet.
  • Who it's for: those who want camping comfort, in a quiet spot, over a long season.

And what if, tonight, you'd rather have a real bed?

After a day of hiking or a boat trip, the idea of a tent in a storm sometimes appeals a little less than a real bed, air conditioning and a breakfast already waiting when you wake up. That's where we come in.

Hotel Le Vaïta, at the heart of the Gulf of Porto, is the comfort option a stone's throw from the same scenery: air-conditioned rooms, peace and quiet, and all our knowledge of the area to help plan your stay. Campsite fully booked in peak season, fickle weather, or simply a night or two of calm before or after camping — we're here for that.

Camping remains a wonderful option for many travellers. We're simply the alternative for when you fancy something different.
